The National Weather Service in Riverton will teach a Severe Weather Spotter training class to increase the number of weather spotters in Green River and the surrounding area, including Rock Springs. The free, two-hour training class will take place at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Green River Fire Station on the corner of Hitching Post and Shoshone.
The course describes how various severe weather phenomena develop, outlines appropriate safety actions, and details procedures for identifying and reporting severe weather to the NWS. Videos and digital images from across Wyoming are shown during the training session to assist volunteers in correctly identifying important storm features. All course materials will be given to volunteers. Anyone who is a current weather spotter is encouraged to attend this session as a refresher.
“Weather spotters are an invaluable resource to the National Weather Service,” said Bill Murrell, spotter program coordinator at the Riverton NWS office, in a press release. “Meteorologists at the NWS office in Riverton incorporate real-time information from trained spotters across western and central Wyoming in our warning-decision process. This information makes it easier to verify what type of weather is actually occurring throughout the area, which allows us to provide more detailed and accurate information to the public.”
