President Barack Obama announced this morning that he will nominate Judge Merrick Garland as associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
The nomination has been a hot topic lately, with many Republican leaders arguing that the next Supreme Court Justice should be nominated after the next president takes office.
Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) released the following statement after President Obama announced the nomination:
“A president on his way out of the White House should not make a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. The American people will soon decide our next president. That person should get to choose the next Supreme Court nominee. Give the people a voice, and let them chart the course for the court and the country.”
The nomination comes less than a week after Senator Barrasso spoke on the senate floor on the importance of giving the people a choice in the nomination by waiting until after the election is over.
The statement made today is consistent with his message in Rock Springs on March 5 at the Muley Fanatic Banquet, where he said, “I voted against both of Barrack Obama’s nominees to the Supreme Court, and a lame-duck President is not going to make a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.”
