Rock Springs Police Department is issuing a reminder to all citizens to be mindful of pedestrians in crosswalks throughout town.
Recently, Rock Springs Police Department has received multiple calls regarding people not obeying the crosswalks near school zones.
As a driver, it is your responsibility to be aware of speed limits, school zones, and crosswalks.
RSPD warns that during the morning and afternoons in Rock Springs, there are younger children crossing the roads to travel to and from school that drivers need to be aware of.
In addition, the current road closure on the Belt Route is causing an increase in traffic near Eastside Elementary which has been causing issues with the crosswalks in this area.
RSPD asks that crosswalks not be ignored at any time of the day and for special attention to be paid during times when more children are utilizing crosswalks.
Failing to yield right-of-way in a crosswalk is a violation of city ordinance.
When driving through Rock Springs, please use the following guidelines near crosswalks:
- Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks and at intersections.
- Be prepared to stop at all marked crosswalks. Stay alert and reduce speed in areas with crosswalks.
- Come to a complete stop if pedestrians are crossing or preparing to cross.
- Wait until pedestrians have crossed at least one lane past the lane you are in before resuming travel.
- Never pass another vehicle that has stopped or is slowing down at a crosswalk.
- Put your phone away and never drive distracted.
