A crash near Elk Mountain on Monday took the life of a 73-year-old Oklahoma resident.
According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, William Couch of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma died after his commercial truck crashed at about 2:46 p.m. Monday on Interstate 80 westbound, approximately five miles west of Elk Mountain.
Couch was driving a 2015 Freightliner commercial truck towing a trailer traveling west on I-80. According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, the truck initially drifted off the interstate to the north. The truck was overcorrected, entered a slide and left the highway into the ditch. During the slide, the trailer split in half and the truck tripped and rolled over.
Couch was wearing his seat belt but still sustained fatal injuries on scene.
Contributing factors in this crash are still being investigated.
This crash marked the 38th highway fatality in Wyoming for 2016. There were 59 fatalities during this same time period in 2015.
