Free Day at Western Wyoming Community College set for April 2

ROCK SPRINGS  – Western Wyoming Community College has announced that its Free Day 2016 event will be held on Saturday, April 2, at the Rock Springs campus. The annual community event will run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will feature free classes for adults, games and activities for children, free lunch, entertainment, and more.300x250_RMB

“We are still in the process of finalizing our lineup of events for this year’s Free Day, but we are very excited about some of the programs we have planned,” said Christopher Sheid, chair of the Free Day Planning Committee, in a press release. “We will be bringing back many past favorites, such as Got Slime, Sports Clinics, and Dutch Oven Cooking. Also, we will be hosting many of the local mascots again this year for another exciting dance contest and photo opportunities with visitors. But we’re also planning some new events for young people and adults that we believe are going to be very popular, as well.”

For the grown-ups, Sheid said, there will be a variety of interesting classes and programs. One highlight will be two presentations by Professor Emeritus Charlie Love, Ph.D., about his travels around the South Pacific islands and specifically about his encounters with and research on the cannibal tribes of New Guinea. There will also be a program highlighting the colorful and sometimes violent history of Rock Springs, and a related art exhibit presented by the Community Fine Arts Center.

Exercise aficionados are invited to participate in free yoga classes and other activities, and free self-defense classes will be available for children and adults. Home chefs will enjoy not only the Dutch Oven cooking class but also afternoon sessions in which campus Sodexo chef Craig Thompson will demonstrate how to make the delicious meal known as Mussels American. And golfers will have an opportunity to polish their game on an indoor putting green. These and many other fun activities promise to make Free Day 2016 Western’s greatest Free Day event ever!

Again this year, Western is inviting area organizations and individuals to join the Free Day experience by providing exhibits or demonstrations on campus that day. Presentations could focus on personal hobbies (stamp collections, photo collections, arts and crafts, etc.) or not-for-profit activities. Free Day display space is NOT available to vendors selling items or contracting for services; however, professional presenters are invited to teach Free Day classes and may discuss their professional services within the context of the class presentation.

Anyone interested in reserving table space or teaching a Free Day class may contact Free Day Committee Chair Christopher Sheid at (307) 382-1661, or at [email protected]. A reservation form may be downloaded at http://ow.ly/YF3ES

All table or presentation reservations should be received no later than Friday, March 18, at 5 p.m.
