Wyoming boys basketball players have the opportunity to try out for a team which will travel to some of the nation’s premier exposure basketball tournaments and be seen by hundreds of college coaches.
Wyoming Elite Basketball is holding tryouts for their boys AAU program at 2 p.m. on Saturday April 9th at Eastside Elementary School in Rock Springs.
Tryouts are open for any male basketball player in Wyoming currently in 8th through 12th grades.
Approximately 30 athletes will be selected to man three teams which will travel to high exposure tournaments.
Rock Springs High School boys basketball coach Robert Harmon said these tournaments will provide the opportunity for Wyoming players to be seen by college coaches from all divisions.
“There’s not a lot of kids that get recruited out of Wyoming, and I found out a big part of that is because, simply, they just don’t get seen,” said Harmon. “I mean, none of the coaches really come to Wyoming to watch a game. So we wanted to offer them a chance to actually be seen.”
Wyoming Elite Basketball has worked to raise money and find sponsors in order to lower the cost for players. However, players are expected to pay dues which include tournament registration, facility use, custodial fees, and NCAA approvals.
Harmon says the team will work together to help cover costs for those players who may not be able to pay for the required expenses.
“If money is the only problem you’re having, come out to the tryout and see if you make the team. We’ll try to work with you the best we can and figure out a way we can get them to be seen,” said Harmon.
Practices are set up for Mondays and Wednesdays in the evening to allow for travel. In addition, Harmon says the team will try to have some weekend practices for players who need more travel time.
Because this is the first year for the program, there is no girls team available at this time. Harmon said he hopes to add a girls team next year if there is enough interest.
