Elk Mountain Wreck No Longer Considered A Fatal Crash By WHP

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says a wreck near Elk Mountain on Monday is no longer considered a fatal crash.RMB

It was previously reported that the death of 73-year-old Oklahoma resident William Couch marked the 38th highway fatality in Wyoming this year, but that is no longer the case.

WHP Sergeant David Wagener says Couch actually suffered a “major medical condition” and passed away before the crash occurred.

Because Couch’s death was caused by a medical condition rather than the crash, it is no longer considered a fatal crash per federal guidelines for fatal crash investigations and reporting.

The crash occurred at about 2:46 p.m. on Monday on Interstate 80 westbound, about five miles west of Elk Mountain.

There have been 37 highway fatalities in Wyoming this year, compared to 59 fatalities during the same time period in 2015.
