Sweetwater County School District #1 is offering free meals to kids this summer as part of the Summer Food Services Program.
The Summer Food Services Program, funded by the USDA, aims to provide healthy meals to kids under 18 years old throughout the summer months.
Teresa Perius, Nutrition Services Coordinator for Sweetwater County School District #1, says these free meals offered at many district schools can help families to ensure the children get the proper nutrition.
“I think families are all on the go right now—not a lot of people are home to cook,” said Perius. “These meals are at no charge… Kids will not go hungry, and that’s our way of connecting to the kids in the summer. We don’t want anybody to go hungry.”
Meals will be provided at Rock Springs High School, Rock Springs Junior High, Black Butte High School, Desert View Elementary, Stagecoach Elementary, Farson/Eden Schools, and Wamsutter Schools.
As part of the Summer Food Service Program, all meals must be consumed at the site where food is offered.
“By having the meals consumed there at the program site, we can ensure the kids are getting the proper nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow during the summer months,” said Perius.
No application is required for kids to participate in the program, and no questions will be asked.
The program offers both breakfast and lunch. Perius says breakfasts consist primarily of cold cereal, fruit, and milk. Lunch options include hot and cold lunches. All lunches include vegetables, fruits, and milk.
Perius said the district has been participating in the program since about 2003.
The school district provided over 10,000 free meals through the program last year.
